IF PAINTINGS WERE PERFUME

IN THE SUMMER/FALL 2021…

…immersed in the creative energy of Jackson Art Center in Washington, DC, I began a new series of work celebrating one of my little-known quirks:

I smell colors!

Whether actual synesthesia—a neurological phenomenon where information meant to stimulate one of the senses stimulates one or more of the other senses—or just very strong associations between colors and olfactory experiences/memories, it’s extremely powerful. It can literally make my mouth water if it’s a crossover associated with food, which makes sense because smell and taste centers in our brains are so closely linked. But it’s not just food smells that colors evoke for me - it can be a scent of fresh laundry on the clothesline in summer or newly mowed grass or deep woods in springtime. And since our olfactory system is very tightly connected to areas of the brain important for memory, color and evoked fragrances can take me back in time and to distant places - all without stepping foot outside my studio.

So here’s to the weird and wonderful hardwiring of color-smell crossover in my brain - what about yours?!
