a-pri-ci-ty (n.)

  1. the warmth of the sun in winter.

  2. an unexpected change in attitude when your heart senses a feeling of hopefulness, contentment, warmth.

As the long arc of winter sun and shadows made its way across my art studio-lab over these past months, I tucked into a new series of experiments. Whether on petite pieces of fine, hand-made parchment, little locally sourced birch panels, or bits of bulky paper with delicate deckle edges, I tested fresh color stories, new ways of infusing light and space, novel ways of excavating the layers beneath.

I didn’t know if it would amount to anything, at least anything that would be put out into the world.

But just like the warmth of the sun in winter, there were unexpected feelings of contentment, hopefulness, warmth. I began to fall in love with a few – they felt tapped in, tuned in, true. So I kept going.

Each set of explorations resulted in many small pieces – some as many as 24! - but I’ve curated my favorites into mini-series of 3 or 6 (when I couldn’t decide!). And while some of the ideas will certainly find their way into my larger works, it feels like these compact pieces deserve their own time in the sun.

Think of them as little love letters from me to you.
